Willy Wonka - a childhood fantasy, reimagined

Some parties are imagined, obsessed over, and quietly dreamt about for decades, waiting for the moment they can finally exist.

Our client had a very clear vision for his 50th, and it was never going to be an ordinary brief.

Having grown up attending the most exceptional parties, he knew exactly what he wanted: a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory celebration. Not a pastiche or a theme. A world.

He arrived with table names already decided, a vision fully formed, and a simple but ambitious directive: create something magical, immersive, elegant, and above all, fun.

This had to be theatrical, yes but also chic, elevated and unexpected. A childhood fantasy reimagined for a very grown-up guest list. We found our canvas in a circus training space in Shoreditch. Over five days, with the help of scenic production company Invisible Blue, it was transformed.

Guests arrived through a discreet entrance and stepped immediately into another reality: a cobbled street, a crooked, storybook house, a world that felt lifted from film but grounded in something tactile and real. Nothing about it suggested a temporary structure, every detail worked to dissolve the boundary between fiction and reality.

This was not a party you arrived at; it was one you discovered, and we wanted the experience to begin before you even walked in. A flower shop created brilliantly by Veevers Carter, sweet stalls, characters weaving through the crowd. Grandpa in bed near the cloakroom, gently greeting guests. Actors drifting in and out of conversations, blurring the line between performance and reality.

Full of bespoke touches, each guest received a personalised chocolate bar, with their name and table, before being swept into the next chapter.

Dinner took place in what can only be described as a fully realised “factory floor” across multiple levels: pipes winding overhead, colour and texture layered in every direction, bespoke printed tabletops in place of linen, towering floral installations interwoven with candy floss trees, toadstools and surreal, sculptural details.

At the centre, a stage, alive with movement as Oompa Loompas performed throughout dinner.

A roaming band moved between tables, magicians appeared and disappeared. Performances erupted and dissolved. Music was rewritten, reworked, rehearsed for days to feel entirely spontaneous, all beautifully choreographed by Private Drama.

A delicious dinner by Bubble Food, complete with dry ice effects, was served before the guests enjoyed a final room, with a chocolate river winding through the space. Cherry blossom trees spun from sugar and candy floss, toffee apples gleaming under soft, reflected light.

The DJ, hidden within a bespoke structure, anchored the room as music carried through until the early hours. Muete, a German techno marching band, entirely unexpected, utterly unforgettable, took the energy somewhere surreal and electric.

Cigars. Late-night snacks. A photo booth that captured the night in all its irreverence. Flowers wrapped and handed to guests as they left, packaged in bespoke Willy Wonka newspaper bearing the final golden ticket. And at the centre of it all, our wonderful client.

He understood that the most memorable parties are not about impressing, but about immersing. He trusted the process, let us create something incredible and simply said, “This is unlike anything else.”

Parties like this exist in a fleeting moment. Days of creation, months of imagining, five extraordinary hours where everything is alive, and then gone. But for those who were there, it was unforgettable, and that’s why we love it.
